Florida LLC Business License: What You Actually Need
The three places a license can come from
State-level (activity-based). There's no general license, but specific activities need a state registration — for example, a sales tax (seller's) registration with the Florida Department of Revenue if you sell taxable goods, or a professional license for regulated fields.
Local (county/city). Many Florida counties and cities require a Business Tax Receipt (formerly the "occupational license") to operate within their limits. This usually applies when you have a physical presence there.
Federal. Only certain regulated industries — alcohol, firearms, transport and a few others — need a federal license.
What this means for most non-resident founders
If you run an online store, agency, SaaS, dropshipping or consulting business with no physical premises in Florida, you typically need no general Florida business license — just your LLC, registered agent, EIN and annual report. Sellers shipping taxable goods to Florida customers should review sales-tax registration. Always confirm for your exact activity.
When you likely DO need something
- You sell taxable goods with a Florida tax nexus → sales tax registration.
- You operate in a regulated profession (legal, medical, financial, real estate, construction, etc.).
- You have a physical location in a Florida county or city that requires a Business Tax Receipt.

Frequently asked questions

- Do online businesses need a Florida license?
