What the official search will not tell you
- Full ownership. Georgia lists a registered agent and some officer detail, but not necessarily every member of an LLC.
- Trademark clearance. Separate from state name distinguishability.
- Tax standing. Georgia Department of Revenue standing is tracked separately.
- Local licensing. County and city business licences do not appear here.

Go to ecorp.sos.ga.gov/BusinessSearch. No account is needed to search.
Step 2. Choose your search type
eCorp lets you search by business name, control number, registered agent name or officer name. The officer search is unusually useful for due diligence, since most states do not offer it.
Step 3. Search the distinctive words
Search the core name rather than the full legal string. "LLC" alone does not make a name distinguishable.
Step 4. Read the status
Georgia splits status into two parts: whether the entity is Active, and whether it is in Compliance. Both matter.
Step 5. Open the filing history
The entity page shows filing history and lets you view documents.
Georgia entity status decoder
- Active / Compliance. Registered and current on the annual registration. This is the status you want.
- Active / Noncompliance. Still registered but the annual registration is overdue. The entity is heading toward administrative dissolution if left alone.
- Admin. Dissolved. The state dissolved it, almost always for missed annual registrations. Reinstatement is possible by filing what is owed plus a fee.
- Withdrawn. A foreign entity that ended its Georgia registration.
If you are checking a counterparty, "Active / Noncompliance" is a warning sign rather than a stop sign. It usually means administrative neglect rather than anything worse, but it tells you they are not on top of filings.
The Georgia deadline that catches people
The annual registration is $60 and due by 1 April every year, regardless of when you formed. Form in November and your first annual registration is due the following April, only months later.
Georgia lets you file up to three years in advance, which is genuinely useful if you are managing an entity from abroad and do not want to track an annual deadline.

Available. Reserve it for 30 days, or file and secure it at registration.
Taken. Check whether the existing entity is Admin. Dissolved. If so the name may free up. Otherwise change a distinctive word.

Georgia business entity search for non-US founders

Two Georgia-specific points for international founders.
